The Whole Circus Has Come to Town

With all the familiar clowns

Patriotic clown waving the national flag — By ajr_images (adobe Stock- licensed)

A villanelle poem on vetting a new supreme court candidate

The whole circus has come to town

Their banners and posters and games

With all the familiar clowns

They chant those old slogans aloud

They banter and bluster and rail

The whole circus has come to town

They gather the children around

Spin fables and old fairy tales

With all the familiar clowns

Bright colors and hairdos astound

Their markers and drawings and frames

The whole circus has come to town

Puppets on platforms abound

And stilted men enter the fray

With all the familiar clowns

Twist the pretzels and meanings and sounds

Fill their mouths with unquenchable flames

The whole circus has come to town

With all the familiar clowns
