the way down

if i ever get there

"driving lesson" jason alan

i'm waking up alone again,

dreamwalking on the roadside.

the signs all say i'm going nowhere.

they say to turn around before i can't,

but i wonder how they could know

if nobody has ever come back

from all the way down -

so, i'm going,

with or without them.

i'm going to see where it goes,

taking that lonely road to nowhere.

nobody is going to stop me.

rocky and rough riding,

but it's my way.

that highway to hell -

it's too well travelled for me.

i'm going where few people ever will.

i spend my nights alone now,

think about the journey -

waking up alone,

tomorrow,

the empty trail.

there are no signs now

to say the direction i'm going.

but i keep wandering ever onward,

determined to find nothing.

i can't say if i'll know if

i find what i seek.

that's why i am going.

it's why i'm not slowing down.

with or without a friend or a penny

to my name or in my pocket,

i'll send post somewhere,

when i get there and see what it is.

i'll tell you where the road to nowhere goes

if i ever get there to the end of it,

if i even know when i do,

when it'll be too late.
