The Talk to American sons
The talk we have to have because this system is broken
Where we sit down our young ones and start to say “not all cops are bad but some...”
They don’t care where you come from or who your daddy is
They see color
A guise that’s born from systematic racism
Grown from the seeds of the farmers of strange fruits
And it’s engrained in our society at the roots
They ignore these unfortunate truths and keep people of color under their boots
So we have the talk with our children
“Now when your pulled over don’t make any sudden moves”
That man will shoot you dead and the court will approve
“They will ask for your license and registration” then you will wait for dictation
“Always respond with respect” even though you may not be given the same consideration
“Keep your voice calm and your words clear” no matter your frustration
“And when it’s over Thank God you survived, Where others were deprived”
The Talk used to be about the birds and the bees
Now it’s about the system that keeps us on our knees
Because it can all be over from a moment of unease or displease and with a loud shout “FREEZE!” And a blast BANG! So loud it pierces the soul of every black mother’s heart
And Powerful enough to make the nightly news
Headline reads:
“Young black teen has been shot dead in what our sources say was a routine traffic stop witnesses say the teen was unarmed”
This is America
The Talk is now part of our culture.
