The Shadow

A poem

A shadow looms above the clouds,

invading his dreams when he visits places,

when he sees faces.

* * *

From the dark it twists the very fibers of his being,

tangling them together in a handful

before plucking them slowly from his chest,

only to ever return some of them,

wrinkled and deformed.

* * *

It roots him to the ground,

his head burning,

his body limp.

* * *

Eyes closed or not,

he sees the same images,

visions of what was or might be,

chilling scenes of trauma, despair and anguish.

* * *

He cannot escape it;

there is no remedy for the demons,

no way to leave the cage without cutting the wings.

* * *

A burden to carry;

the shadow reminds him just as he forgets about it,

diving from above the clouds

and crawling under his skin once more.

* * * * * *
