The Present Past

A Sonnet

In the cells of every small, caged pet

Lurks the biography of a monster

Clever primates are so quick to forget

How little then and now really differ

Each poet, prophet, queen or saint is not

Much different from the average ape

When pretty birds are behind cage bars caught

The hearts of proud dragons yearn for escape

Beautiful feathers are just hip new scales

Charming songs are translations of old roars

Postmodern slogans echo ancient tales

Diseases old and new make the same sores

Should your grey parrot seem a squawking bore

See in its eye a fearsome dinosaur

Sonnet

Nice angle on the challenge topic. When I was a boy we had a few different parrots. Most of them were just as ferocious as a dinosaur. They could only be handled with gloves Those little vice and file beaks were brutal and, no matter how long we had them, most refused to be domesticated. All except for one little fella we rescued out of its nest when it's momma went missing. We kept him alive, but not knowing what we were doing, its growth was stunted. We never clipped its wings, because it had no interest in trying to fly. Slept on its back quite often, too. He was a sweet little bird. We never told him he was a dinosaur.

FANTASTIC.. My grandmother's old parrot had the personality of an old dinosaur. Only two people were allowed to pet him, my grandmother and my mother. He'd bite anyone else who stuck even a finger in his cage.
