Her voice was like a small bird singing in the morning.

Nice round fluid tones I heard when I was a child.

Totally gone after her second stroke.

She did not try to sing her throat would not allow her to gather up enough air to channel to her mouth.

Back in my childhood I remember her humming those old-time church songs.

“Give me that Ol ’time religion, in her lowest key almost alto.

Give me that Ol’ time religion.

“What a friend we have in Jesus.”

When the tears rolled down her face in the choir, they were washing away the pain.

Many pains some known and some unknown.

The pain of being denied a chance to sing on stage.

Her papa trying to keep her safe from the world.

“No girl of mine will be up there on no stage.”

She gave that spirit to me and my sister.

“You be what you want to be.”

"What a friend we have in Jesus."

She sent her first girl to college.

With only a promise and a $500 book scholarship.

This girl came home with a degree and a lot of tenacity.

She went on to live her life as she chose mistakes and all.

This girl is now an old woman with many, many accolades on her wall.

She calls herself and her Lord by another name.

"You be what you want to be," she still hears her mother's voice

My friend is called Allah. God in Arabic.

A simple four-letter word.

Cannot be divided. One!
