The Only Thing I Know

Don‘t you see?

I am love.

It’s the only thing I know.

I don’t have many friends

Or people in my life

Because there’s not a lot of people

I love or can connect with through love.

I surround myself with books, movies, music

Because I can connect to the love stories within.

But you…

You were different.

We connected through things we loved.

You spoke my language and understood me.

You wanted love. You needed love.

You opened yourself up to my love

And gave me your love in return.

We spoke of love.

We danced with love.

We shared love.

We laughed in love.

We fell in love.

We even made a little love.

But then when you tell me

You don’t want or need love.

If you close yourself off or reject love,

Then you close me off and reject me .

And I don’t know

How to connect with you

Other than to give you space and time.

I don’t want to smother you

With my love and affection

If that’s not what you want

Or what you need right now.

But I just don’t know

How to give you

Anything less.
