The Life Of A Heart Garden

From conception to fallow ground

The innocence of the destined life of a newborn,

The beginning of a seed sprouted from love,

A fertile ground; sprinkled with possibilities,

As a heart begins to beat on its own.

**

A precious vessel of world colliding,

Capable of greatness; the defeater of shadows,

Virgin ground seeded with lessons, love and compassion,

To grow into fruitfulness of one’s tomorrow.

**

Deep within that innocent heart a secret chamber,

A garden of such beauty it’s treated by the soul,

A seed of empathy flowers into a blossom of integrity,

Amidst a sea of adoration, and awe-inspiring joy.

**

Year upon year this garden flourishes,

Lessons distort the weeds pulled from its depth,

Prickles discarded after their usefulness,

Leaving the pristine pathways silkiness upon bare feet.

**

Tears water the roots of premature seedlings,

As they reach their stems towards the laughter and giggles,

Pride softens their thorns as their stems reach for the ceiling of peace,

With darkness falling upon their sleepy heads.

**

Excitement nourishes the air in which they thrive,

Nutrients imprinted in cells of wisdom,

Tendrils reaching for the stars that bathe them in their glory,

As caring hands prune the deadwood that dusts their branches.

**

In with the new, discarding the old,

Anticipation boosts and heightens the love,

Tilled soil replenishes the abandoned hope of yesterday,

While age implants the wisdom of patience.

**

Once life of the heart nears its end,

This garden is harvested one final time,

Its job completed, its pathway journeyed,

A final gift to a departed soul as it soars to its next journey.

**

Satisfaction the last gift expended,

Tears of fulfilment drench the earth one final time,

A patch now lays fallow as it rests and replenishes,

Waiting patiently for that new seed to birth.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
