The Joy of Youth

Not a care in the world

School’s out,

For the summer,

The air feels cleaner,

The sun warmer,

The future brighter,

And the heart happier.

**

And summer camp is just a day away!

**

I’ve just finished packing,

Mum’s checking I’ve remembered everything,

And my suitcase is closing.

**

Summer camp day arrives!

**

I’m the first in the car; impatiently waiting,

Chomping at the bit,

Ants in the pants excited,

Let’s go, let’s go.

**

Summer Camp awaits!

**

We’ve arrived — wahoo,

I dash from the car; suitcase in hand,

“Bye Mum, you can go now,”

Ahhhhhh, the freedom,

The ‘let your hair down’ moment of perfection.

**

Hellooooooo Summer Camp!

**

First day excitement,

Learning the rules,

Exploring the camp site,

Meeting new buddies.

**

Summer Camp firsts!

**

Our first day of adventure closes,

The bonfire is lit,

Dinner is served upon paper plates,

BBQ delight, fresh seafood and hot potatoes,

Deliciousness like no other.

**

Adore Summer Camp food!

**

The night is dark,

The stars twinkle from above,

The bonfire warms our hearts,

And the stories begin,

Each scarier than the last,

Until we’re huddle together in delightful fright.

**

Summer Campfire horror stories are the best!

**

It’s time for bed,

But there’s no sleep for the excited,

Boys whooping and hollering in mischief,

Pranking and laughing.

**

Summer Camp friendships are cemented!

**

The days roll on,

We’ve grown taller, matured — tanned and fitter,

Mum’s car rounds the curve,

Sadness evades the goodbyes,

And we drive off into the horizon.

**

Summer Camp, see you next year!

This poem has been written as part of Sahil Patel's Lifeline's poetry prompts on Medium.

Today's prompt is: Write a poem that lets you explore your childhood summer camp memories and experiences. Enjoy the nostalgia of bonfires, late-night tales, and friendships formed under the stars. Talk about the times that are still fresh in your memory. Let your words paint a vivid description of innocence, joy, and innocence that may be experienced in this stage of adolescence.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
