The Holiday of Dedication
A holiday-themed free-verse poem about Hanukkah
The people of the Tanakh
light the metal statue
called the tall silver Menorah.
We snack on salty munchers
flat like flapjacks
oily and crispy like french fries
called potato latkes.
The sport we play
with comrades and elders
where we spin, bet and compete
with mini toys called dreidels.
Donuts covered in sweet powder
fried, moist and chewy like bread
filled with gooey jam and jelly
of all palettes of colours and flavours.
We pray and sing
hug and kiss our folks
laugh and mingle at home.
