The Future Is Theirs

The start of the merging of two families

My oldest Son bent his knee two days ago

To offer his long term partner his adoration,

His love, his future and his commitment

For the entirety of his life’s duration.

***

She, of course, happily responded with a yes

Her face lit and her smile showing in her eyes,

Nine years it’s taken to reach this outcome

But the time is right, the perfect compromise.

***

We were invited to drive down the coast

To celebrate with the happy couple for the night,

An invite was also extended to her family

The merging of two families suddenly felt right.

***

I’m happy to welcome a daughter into our fold

One more treasured family member,

The next step is to tie that eternal knot

In the exchange of vows come September.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
