Looking For The Right One

It’s hard to see through the intense glare

Of scales casting the sun from the sea.

There are far too many to compare.

And they all have their eyes set on me.

But I can only choose one.

//

I can’t see myself in this mirror

That shrinks my pupils to grains of sand.

So I close my eyes, wading nearer.

None of them so far shall take my hand.

Do I still have to choose one?

//

Where are their cool blues, purples, and greens?

Or the warming pinks, yellows, and reds?

I only see deceitful white screens.

No wonder men turn away their heads,

And they are left with no one.

//

If they don’t stop now, I’ll choose no one.

I’m not looking at them anymore.

Why do they try to give me the sun?

I turn around and face back to shore.

I wanted to see their scales.

//

Wading back, a fin brushes my knee.

I’m not taking any more chances.

But maybe this one understands me.

Silent, I accept its advances.

Perhaps this one I will choose.

//

I look down and see scales of every.

Color glistening towards my face,

Illuminating me in revery

I’ve never seen one move with such grace.

Yes, this is the one I’ll choose,

//

The only one that’s honest to me,

The most beautiful of anyone,

And though she denies her own beauty,

I vastly prefer scales to the sun.

Come, my love. Let us set sail.
