painting by Diana Bruce, a gift to my favorite diver (my husband)
The Diver–
He floats aloft in endless blue
The only sound his breath
The only thought the sea
He exists for this moment
A tiny speck in an immense ocean
He is ultimately in touch
Alone and in his own mind
What drives him here is unknown
Even to him
No one questions him
No one would, should, or will
He breathes the limited breath
His stores are finite
He is at peace with that
Later when he is human again
He will hear the silence
He will embrace the memory
It is his and his alone
The sea, his thoughts
His alone.
