The Definition of August
/ôˈɡəst/ respected and impressive.
The Sunday and sunset of summer,
beloved by poets and painters and harvesters
whose auburn hands, despite their toil,
cannot hold the smallest flame
to the God-ordained green sunshine
that turns golden in the right light,
a hint of what is to come,
the bloodied and blushing leaves
with eyebrow scars like fighting dogs
fallen
to the ground
like soldiers
in hemorrhagic shock,
watching a film noir explosion of recycled starstuff,
a white fire inside their brain
before the end
