The Deep

Coming by surprise you appeared on my horizon,

you brought joy and laughter.

From then on I imagined you'd be my ever after,

oh, how sure I was that you were the one.

***

We ran right at each other full steam ahead,

hand in hand enjoying that moment in the sun.

I'd always known it was you, my only one,

never pondering possible, a moment with you I would dread.

***

I did not know the truth of your goal,

nor that you'd cause me to grieve.

Never imagining a day you'd just decide to leave,

never imagining in my pain, you'd play such a role.

***

We were in so deep, deeper than a fairy tale,

deeper than anything I'd done.

Doing it with you was easy because you were the one.

We were perfect, perfect enough not to fail.

***

Failing we did, so quick, so fast,

the hundreds, maybe thousands of faces,

seeing only yours closing my eyes, you in their places.

I never thought you wouldn't be the last.

***

In too deep,

I know it now.

The power I gave you, oh wow.

Will I ever not see you in my sleep?
