The Agony of Grief

The struggle is real

By Colleen Millsteed Published 6 months ago 1 min read

The heart shatters at the loss of love,

The crippling pain of a death of one loved,

As they leave us alone in a smaller world,

Alone to survive on our own.

**

Gone but never forgotten,

The pain rises and ascends to suffocate,

The chest tightens, threatening to explode,

And the waterfall breaks in a never-ending cascade.

**

Dreams are sought over the act of living,

Fantasyland a preferable residence,

Because disbelief has taken hold,

Strangling our mind of the truth of it all.

**

Shock wantonly wraps around us,

As we cannot accept the truth that is unwillingly laid before us,

The struggle is real,

And forgetfulness an easy assignment.

**

The pain crescendos through our being,

Our mind refusing to accept that which is too real,

But until it does, the grieving cannot succumb,

Into acceptance of a monumental loss.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

The truth for every family with whom I sat, not to mention for us when others did the sitting (& the cleaning & the cooking & the receiving of guests).

"forgetfulness an easy assignment" masterfully written phrase!

  • This was soooo emotional and relatable! Sometimes it just takes so long for grief to turn into acceptance. Loved your poem!
