T.S. Seuss

Variations on a form.

Do I dare to eat a peach?

My teeth are old and brittle,

a cavity in each.

If I strike the pit in the middle,

I will swear and cry and screech.

Should I masticate what is so juicy and sweet?

Or should I take a moment to ruminate

on safer things to eat?

Apples give me gas,

extremely horrid wind.

And bananas give me hives,

Red, raised, and bumpy skin.

Pineapple is quite pleasant,

But not in season yet.

Pears are not my favorite,

But I often take what I can get.

So, a pear it is, a pear it will be.

There's no use debating,

no need for deliberating.

Eat the pear and don't be scared,

because the pear is a pit free wonder.

You'll escape toothaches and hungry mistakes,

because a pear will forgive every blunder.
