Summer Children

The Quicksilver Years

Passions lead them to explore.

Between the spring-time years and the autumn of one’s life lies the long, confusing span of summer. Yet when we look back at it, it will all seem like quicksilver.

In summer do the children turn…

The sun, a diff’rent color in their eyes;

And questions linger more and more

About the lack of substance in the skies.

In summer, children start to yearn…

The star beyond the limits of their sighs.

And passions lead them to explore,

The scars eclipsing whimperings and cries.

Oh, summer clouds, aloof and stern…

Sunbeams that once delighted with surprise,

And waves that tagged you at the shore,

Or dragons lighting in benign reprise.

The summer songs are hard to learn…

The seedlings of awareness on the rise;

And longer shadows on the floor

Bespeak a time the summer child defies.

In summer, colors fade and burn…

One candle flickers as another dies.

Young hearts no longer in the chore,

They soon are giving counsel to the wise.
