Slither

crimson crawling

Slowly slither

from the shadows of the bones.

Slip from the skull

soft, smooth skin

selecting a ray of sunlight to reflect,

a bit dull, too tight around her

Not the jewels that grew beneath

ready to leave it behind

Uncoiling

creeping

curl around rocks

Press against the shifting sands

into the slate of False dawn

Leave it behind the dark

of night

Close your eyes remembering

the moonless dark

Dulls the scarlet crimson rose petal scales

just more each evening

Under the arching ribs as we curl up for sleep.

Having enough

scratch your nose against the sandstone

scrub the itch of others’ suspicions

break the molt

slowly

slip by slip

leave it behind

slither from the sticky

press your cheek to the rough

scales at your very front

Breaking.
