Skin

she was born with skin as dark as night

She was born with skin as black as night

but the world wished for one as pure as white

hid her face away from the white man's bite

concealed her body with dresses that ran below her thighs

With a face like hers, she was tagged the odd one out

Enlarged lips and nose, oh who could ever love her?

The world penned "white" in everlasting ink

Leaving a young girl abhorring her every kink

Beneath her skin, there was blood redder than flames

And white bones wrapped with sickly green veins

She was fully human, unlike what the world had to say

But as punishment for her colour, she was beaten with hate

No one saw it, not even her, the beauty in her race

The smiles and crinkles that painted her face

Eyes like chocolate, a sweet sweet taste

And Thighs thick like honey, covering time and space

Hate grew in the mirror, shadowing the light

Society destroyed her race by stabbing it with lies

This girl was born with beautiful skin, as black as night

But she ripped it apart to be as pure as white
