Sisters Separated Long Ago

A Poem Featuring Massospondylus

Life started with star seeds from the skies above.

From the muddy swamps came both a warm and a cold-blooded love.

.

The lobed-fined sarcopterygian fish with diamond pattern armoured scale.

Passed onto the beasts that followed, this simple repeating detail.

The diamond is a super mathematical function for predator recognition.

The vertices can become wings creating a geodesic angel’s disposition.

.

The Sarcopterygian fish first gave rise to the Acanthosteg.

The tetrapod amphibian had pectoral and pelvic limbs, the arm and leg.

They crawled from the seas where life had begun

Passing to their descendant embryos, a neck that sticks out, gills and lung.

'

Adding grey and white matter to the amphibian brain bud

Allowed many species not to remain stuck in the mud.

.

These Amphibians, with amniotic sacs, gave rise to two sisters.

Parthenogenetic asexual females become sexual, giving rise to misters.

Variations brought diversity, but the feminine remained in either gender,

with a chameleon power to blend in, survive, and not to surrender.

.

In subsequent species, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and man.

The present moment was embraced. The conscious drive to survive began.

.

The reptilian Sauropsid, Nyasasaurus

was both ancestor to meat-eating Tyrannosaurus the Manospondylus gigas.

and the most studied dinosaur,Massospondylus, who upon plants did feast.

while the synapsid Pelycosaur, eventually led to the hairy hominid beast. .

The ancients respected serpent reptilian lords of the sea and night skies.

Though a meteor destroyed many, we still see through dragon eyes.

Calculating thoughts of survival, ingrained from before the great flood.

We carry programmed messages from ancient fish through our blood.

.

Chemicals that follow forces with left- and right-hand rules

direct the oldest, primitive reptilian brain, and pass on survival’s tools.

The Reptilian complex surrounds the hippocampus and triggers a chain.

The dragon within connects feelings, emotions and the rational brain.

The cerebral cortex created civilization, through an uneasy truce

that tethered moods and emotions of the R complex, by a loose noose.

.

For survival , the fish brain still battles with cerebral synapse for control.

Yet , automatic memories, instinct and knowledge make humans whole.

.

The sustenance of destiny is fickle and prey to delusion.

The belief that what one thinks exists is all that exists, is a false conclusion.

Yet, in spite of facts, it is Massospondylus that I choose to enjoy.

I believe it was because it was my first dinosaur toy.

My attraction to the ancestral dinosaur Massospondylus, is distinct.

They had parental care, a force shared with mankind, that is not extinct.
