Salt

yeast

flour

water

within

fire

emerges

as

bread

this

simple

food

a

basic

essential

which

is

baked

broken

and

shared

from

religion

to

religion

region

to

region

everywhere

there

is

a

version

of

this

staple

and

I

am

certain

that

before

there

was

Jew

or

Christian

before

there

was

religion

that

those

who

heard

the

calling

of

God

through

his

angel

those

who

followed

the

brightest

star

through

the

black

of

night

through

the

desert

to

the

city

of

David

to

the

stable

in

Bethlehem

to

the

manger

where

the

baby

was

born

I

believe

those

chosen

the

kings

the

peasants

those

witnesses

of

miracles

prayed

together

shared

bread

with

one

another

and

with

the

new

mother

and

father
