I should have kissed you.
I was kicking myself on the train, wondering if you were too, thinking in that moment,
this could be something,
debating if it was too soon to think like that, and it was.
I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up, shouldn't have started the first draft of this poem on the train while I waited for cell service to return, shouldn't have let my guard down so quickly.
I was warned, multiple times, just like always
& I shouldn't have ignored that, but at least I don't have to say
I shouldn't have kissed you.

The Golden Valley
The difference between light and dark could be as quick and simple as a flip of a switch, the drawing of a curtain, the opening of one’s eyes. It could be more gradual like the slow adjustment of the diaphragm on a microscope, the turn of a planet on its axis, the growing light as you approach the end of a tunnel. A flicker in the dark, a steady glow in the distance, a flash in the night sky.
