You and I were passing ships in the night, but you slowed, shouted over the water asking if you could travel with me, change your course

and so I put down my anchor to adjust to you until you heard the Sirens calling in the distance,

you hurried off into the darkness before I could even notice

the emptiness of the water around me now significantly more prominent in your place

the waves recede and I stand there wondering what it feels like to submerge, to let them and the vacant space wash over me until the water fills my lungs

but only for a moment

the ship must move forward as it did before

it is not an option to jump overboard
