She Paints Pictures of Trees

a poem by Brian S. Clifton

Living overthinking inside her head

she’s already been through a lot.

Abandoned, betrayed, and mislead

moments of peace, far between

and why she paints pictures of trees.

Trees that have grown regal and tall,

great oaks bending unbreakable

turning even more beautiful in fall.

Symbolizing knowledge and life

transcending every culture and time.

Deeply rooted arbors well grounded

proverbial safe harbors in storms

providing warmth and giving shelter

wishing she was more like them

though she doesn't believe in herself.

Why she has always settled for less

self-perpetuating a cycle again

being a victim of abuse and neglect.

So she loses herself amid leaves

while searching for solace in trees.
