One Shadow, Two Souls

Hovering above, was a shadow.

A shadow attached to a solemn soul,

But also, to another.

Burdened with both,

The weight on its shoulders grew,

Until it began to slouch.

Lifting off the surface.

The two souls turned simultaneously.

In awe and in fear.

As the shadow had grown quite substantially.

With one look shared amongst themselves,

As if on cue,

they both bolted

And took off in separate directions.

What have they foolishly forgotten?

That it was simply impossible to outrun a shadow.

As all it was tasked to do was but follow.

However, an odd phenomenon had occurred.

Split into two opposite paths,

A tear grew along the shadow’s curtain of darkness.

Finally severing the two souls’ attachment.

The split shadows have shrunk,

Their burden now equitably divided.

The souls continued on oblivious,

Until it was too late;

With every foot step,

As distance grew,

Tearing them further apart.

Creating damage that will be forever irreparable.
