Scattered Thoughts

Of once upon a time

Days of warm sunshine long since past and freshly bloomed nights of the blackest black muddle together like bitter wine.

It’s hard to separate the bright from the dark when everything looks shockingly grey.

Stirring my coffee, I stand lost in the yesterdays, dreaming of the tomorrows never to be seen.

Treasured memories flood my mind while tear-stained realities dampen my heart.

Ringing phone, the wake-up jolt.

Are you all right? What happened? When’s the service? Do you need help?

Can I have a moment to breathe? A moment to think. Or, at least, a moment to feel.

There’s been so much said that you never heard and so many words uttered that I never wanted to hear. There’s so much I still want to say that you can no longer hear.

I held your hand when I said goodbye, as you held mine when we first said hello.

Once upon a time you read us fairy tales. One day soon, we’ll read your eulogy.

Not knowing what to talk about in the present. Painfully aware that there’ll be no talking in the future. Nothing left to say but for the once upon a times.
