Running Like Water

Portrait of a moment

The City holds it's breath

Trapped under a wave of endless heat

I stand suspended

Each second an eternity

Caught in the chasm of time and space

Each breath echoes

The sound of my heartbeat.

Life rushes on

An endless sea

But we are frozen

Simply going through the motions

Only a faint echo remains of our humanity.

Fake smiles and crocodile tears

Compassion holds no weight here

We mask our pain

Glib words and callous shrugs

Will we ever release

the screams in our hearts?

The City moves on

A dizzying pattern of busyness

Too much in a hurry

To hear a child's cry

A woman's sigh

We live the quiet desperation

of a wasted life.

Caught up in the motion

The endless pattern of doing

Vainly filling our lives

with possessions

As if that would satisfy our empty hearts.

In our endless race to the top

We step on those at the bottom

With false compassion

We give a coin to a stranger

But can't give a moment

to the listen to the cries of their hearts.

Instead of the motion

Let's embrace the waiting

And take the time to listen

To the sorrow of our brother

To the cries of our sister

For we are all together

We all need one another

Let's stop for a moment

And open up our hearts.
