Role Reversal

A Poem

I came into this world

And you took care of me

Fed me and cleaned me

Made sure I went to school

You brushed the knots out of my hair

When I was sad, you took me to McD’s

When I was happy, you took me to the park

You were from the time

Of washing mouths out with soap

You worked a full-time job,

But still found the time to feed nine kids

You didn’t know how to be a mother,

But you tried

Now, our roles are reversed

It’s my turn to take care of you

A stroke has left you weakened

And you don’t need to be alone

As the only bio-daughter,

Your place belongs with me

Now it’s my turn

To cut up your food

And to wash your clothes

To pick up your medicines

And take you to the doctors

It’s my time to open up your bottles

It’s my time to cook for you

I don’t know how well I can fill your shoes

Until I try

I’m sure I’ll make mistakes

But I’ll always do my best

To do what is right for you

Just as you always did

What you thought was best for me

It’s your time to lean on me

Come near, sit a spell, and listen to tales of old as I sit and rock by my fire. I'll serve you some cocoa and cookies as I tell you of the time long gone by when your Greats-greats once lived.
