Reflection

A poem on a palindrome

HANNAH

A palindrome

HAN reflected on itself in a crystal mirror

Perfectly symmetrical

Aspirant and nasal

Dancing off a hundred thousand tongues around the world,

Calling sisters, mothers, daughters,

Sometimes sons, fathers, and brothers,

Calling me.

CHANA

Hebrew history declaring grace,

Favour from God in the form of a child,

Following months of prayer,

Years of rejection,

Decades of determination,

To attain society’s definition for a woman’s worth.

HANA

“God has favoured me with a child - God’s gift to the world”

the deliverer of the favour

The wrapping around the gift

Am I not gift enough?

Or is my value determined by what I provide?

HANNAH

Two sides of a crystal mirror.

One real, one reflected - both true

The best of both worlds,

Graced as one,

A gift in someone’s life

An old name renewed.
