A part in history and myth

They played well in

Their inky, black wings

Stain the pages of humans’

Connective stories

Once as heralds to

A Wise and wandering God

King Odin

God of poets and knowledge

Heralds they were

Of Memory and Thoughts

Which they whispered to him

At days end.

In Greece, oracles of fortunes

Messengers of fate

Good or ill

Sat too upon the Sun God

As scavengers

An ill-begotten omen

Clings to them.

Messengers of ill-fate

Dark muse of tragic writer

looming upon a bust

-quoted, ‘Nevermore’-

Famed poem quilled

By tragic author

Its message and shadow

Lingers

Into modern day

Still inspires.
