Public Service Announcement

My sons are black

My family is too

But my face is white

Which makes it easier for you

To pretend I’m racist too.

If you think Meghan and Harry lied

Despite England’s history of white pride

That black lives don’t matter and

“Those criminals deserve to die”,

That immigrants are problems at the border

That little black boys

Can’t have guns full of water

That my sons will grow

Into a threat against your daughter,

That somehow they can't be

“As good as a father”

Then you are breeding and feeding

A racist monster

If you think people are trashy

Because of the hue of their skin

That inherited poverty

Is an optional thing,

That the system was built

For all to succeed,

If you think white supremacists

Don’t know they’re a dying breed,

That prison populations

Reflect the doers of bad deeds,

I pray you acquire an education

That you so desperately need.

If you think your family is better

Not allowing other cultures in,

That God had anything to do

With the hateful mess we are living

That being biracial or black

Somehow makes a person lower class

That the beautiful children I teach in class

Deserve a cruel and brutal life pass

Just know there are souls

Crushed by your uncaring

Hateful lash

If you’ve ever laughed at a racial slur

Or giggled at a racist joke

Or stood quiet while a non white person

Was embarrassed or harassed,

It was racism you helped provoke.

If you’ve never been the minority

Or the only white person in the room

Congratulations, this announcement

Was written just for you,

Because passive ignorance

Is just a racist person’s fuel.

If you say you aren’t racist,

But you stand behind one,

You are still a racist,

(just a really cowardly one)

If you think learning about

black history and pride

Is NOT American history

And is a waste of your time

Please don’t wait for an invitation

To exit my family's life.
