putting empty words

on a blank page sounds

like a broken silence —

echoing over and over again

in your mind

as you decide against them

and try once more.

the first time sounds like

crackling wood

at a bonfire,

ash rising in the night sky

like the words in your throat —

you spit them out

on the flames to

ride them to the stars,

but it all just goes up

in plumes of smoke.

the next few times sound like

a leaking faucet,

the drips pitter-patter

like the beat of song

you cannot remember —

the lyrics? what are the lyrics?

but the thought slips out of your head

like water down a drain.
