Pictures At An Exhibition

Introduction

In the seventies, I was still in grammar school and developing an eclectic taste in music, although my music teachers had put me off classical music, as you probably already know.

I was not sure how to do this, and I am still thinking about it as I write. I was listening to the album today and thought maybe I could do a plagiaristic poem using the song titles, or maybe just a playlist.

I have included "The Great Gates Of Kiev", (that's what it was known as in the UK then, though it is now properly called Kyiv), which is probably my favourite song on the album.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer were an appreciated band, but when they covered a complete classical piece, it should not have been a surprise, as Keith Emerson had tackled a lot of classical pieces with the Nice, and you can check them out here:

While the album includes "Blues Variation" to close side one and an insipid version of Kim Fowley's "Nutrocker" (a variation on Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" by B. Bumble and The Stingers) to close side two, the rest of the album stands up very well, and it encouraged me to buy the Sir Georg Solti version, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel.
