our summer love story
meeting and falling in love with my future husband
in the valley, a first date before us
champagne pouring, hearts are beating wildly
he is charming, she is being cautious
little smiles, summer sun shines brightly
love at first sight? we may never know, but
by june they start to travel together
they’re more than just friends, and soon in their gut
they’ll know they are meant to be forever
by july it’s concerts and desert heat
to the ocean blue, lakes and rivers, too
won her dog over, her parents he meets,
by august both have said i love you.
two summers ago, would you now believe?
I marry my love on this new year’s eve?

The Block Mayor
Like every warm day, Terrence is finishing this day on his L-shaped porch, sipping whisky from a dented flask. Cars pass by slowly, and he watches young women pushing babies in strollers; he hears the neighbors’ arguments and knows which have a regular income and those who are unemployed. Terrence is the self-appointed block mayor, laying judgment on his fellow folk.
