Our Idols

We dug deeper

Shovels hitting earth

In steady motion,

Static place

A never changing scene

As we developed logic

And put in place

A civilization

We thought Godly.

We constructed an empire

From stone and bone,

A creation with tomorrow

Our focus,

A world we dreamed

A country we created

Brick by brick,

Life by life-

With no regrets

Because yesterday was over

And we were here

To write the words

For our future.

We burned bridges

And built fences,

Desecrated landscapes

And exclaimed hero-

Today

Today

Today only.

Tomorrow we changed

Flipped a coin

And our notion of belief-

We claimed remorse

But really?

Seed laid by politician

And watered by socials,

Fueled by hate

On either side.

We destroyed statues

We changed names

We banned faces

And canceled debates.

We searched for a face,

Skinning ourselves

In embarrassment

And pity,

Afraid of the eyes

Of the ones we had wronged-

We begged for forgiveness

But never said

What we did wrong.
