Only Emily

A Sonnet for Emily Dickinson

"Emily Dickinson" by Fabrizio Cassetta, 2015

Permit me to whisper a serenade

Brash shouting would your delicate ear daze

Fools’ mouths let frothing gibberish cascade—

Soft as velvet, my words must match your gaze

How deftly did you weave from solitude

An ethereal empire of verse?

Regal was your peculiar attitude

You talked with death in his shadowy hearse

Alone, you feathered hope like a strange bird

A fly buzzed ‘round your corpse; you lived again

To birth a fresh enigma with each word

And thus complete your labyrinth arcane

Wider than any sky was your wild brain—

A sponge that drank all oceans, without strain

A fitting tribute indeed to delightful Dickinson. Or should that be deft rather than fitting?

Emily must be thrilled, a tale woven just for her. I wonder who will weave for me. Oh well, a great tribute to Emily.
