On importance of finishing the job

A not so fairy tale

Three chipmunks and a squirrel once

Ganged up to catch a cat;

"It is the cat that always hunts," -

They said - "And why is that?

Let's turn the tables and the tide,

Because in nuts we trust;

The cat may run, the cat may hide,

But stop that cat we must!'

It went according to the plan

Until the early fall,

The cat, surprised, has hid and ran

As rodents big an small

Had joined the fight to de-catize

The garden and the yard,

And fire burned in all their eyes

And many hides got scarred.

But then the weather cooled and nuts

Were getting hard to find,

And more and more what ifs and buts

Were aimed and reassigned;

FIrst went the chipmunks to their dens

To sleep and hibernate,

The squirrel tried to change the trends -

Too little ant too late -

Then rabbits ran as rabbits do,

Then mice have scattered off,

And groundhogs went home, too,

With fever, aches and cough.

As squirrel, tired and upset

Was hanging by a thread,

Who came along if not the cat

Who wasn't quite yet dead.

Its tail was thick, its ears were flat

Its claws as sharp as knives

Because - remember - every cat

Has six or seven lives.
