My Creativity

Reuse & Recycle

It’s important to me, and our future, to recycle and reuse

When an object is no longer useful, unwanted or broken,

This is where my passion and my inspiration comes from

And my imagination and creativity is awoken.

***

So today, what do I have to start with?

A piece of wood from an old timber bed

Some sun faded fabric and leftover nails,

Spare cotton from an embroidery project

And a precious drawing my son unveiled.

***

Let’s now look at the tools I have at hand?

A hammer for the nails

The fabric will need some glue,

My trusty old scissors

Oh yes they’ll all do.

***

I gaze over the materials, deep in thought

When suddenly inspiration comes to mind,

I can glue the fabric to the bed timber,

Lay over my son’s drawing and tack the outline.

I now need my trusty old scissors

To gently cut around the nails and remove the drawing,

To leave us now with a reclining man’s silhouette

As the end result of all our exploring.

Mmmmmmm but where to go from here?

Oh I know, we still have the embroidery cotton on hand,

Along with some of the leftover nails

Which can be randomly tacked around the man.

***

Using the embroidery string and nails together

To become “Spotlights” in string art,

Highlighting the reclining man’s silhouette

Along with his beating pink heart.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
