Mother Moon

Eclipse Challenge

By Shirley BelkPublished 14 days ago β€’ 1 min read

Earth has Father Sun and Mother Moon,

Curious Givers of such a Light Festoon.

Launching off in patterns, sparks, and phases,

I (earth) am left to wonder...this spectacle amazes.

Partitioning Sun's time, Mama Moon steps hence,

Surrounds me with totality, in her motherly defense.

Eternally as strong as Father Sun and without pretense.

Although Fathers are oftentimes portrayed as strong and bold, Mothers are usually seen as being in the background providing care and nurture. But there are times when Mother is even stronger, even in her muted light. There are some things that a child can only tell their mother, where their secrets and dreams are best kept. This is what a solar eclipse makes me think of...

    Wonderful entry.

  • Beautiful imagery. The first original artwork I ever bought was a pair of prints of 'Man holding the sun' and 'Woman holding the moon' which I still have and this acrostic evokes the same feeling of wholeness. Thanks for sharing and well done. Good luck in the challenge.

Women, mothers have always been strong. Men just took center stage, yet behind them stood mountains of the strength of women nudging them forward. The time of women is here.

Shirley I am so thrilled to have found you and subscribed. I had an immediate emotional reaction when reading. Thank you for writing. And as for your explanation - I totally agree. My son Ross (now 21) is often embedded or the focus of my writing. I am looking forward to reading more of your work. This is a solid contender for the challenge. Powerful and I like your added insight to it. My mother is one of the strongest people I know.

With this you personified the Earth as a child, with father Sun and mother Moon and created whimsical atmosphere. It evokes a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world, as well as the bond between parent and child.

  • Just wonderful. That's it.

I love the direction and angle you took with this one, Shirley. Would never have considered that actually. Loved the rhymes and the whole concept, thought and execution. Sterling work, really! I really love the final line...because I think that really highlights the mother's role and how they often do it without all the attention and accolades that dads get. (Even when dads deserve it...the mother usually equally or more so deserves it.)

  • This was so powerful and so beautifully written! Loved your poem!

I loved this one, Shirley! It is definitely ECLIPSE and sun and moon! Good job. Yeah Mom is the center, Dad is peripheral.
