Maddy

a poem from the heart

Young Maddy shivered though the presence

Of others kept her warm

Her lips did quiver, her being shake

As the ship sailed on through the storm

Her fears were rising and wouldn’t fall

As she looked around the hold

These grieving Blacks sharing her fate

Had been dragged away from all

The mighty ship, the Pearl Dawn

Sailed on through the night

As sailors kept her form afloat

Through raging breakers white

Up on top the Captain stood

On the Bridge tall as he could

He yelled at the crew to keep them fettered

While down below the captives fretted

Dear young Maddy just one of hundreds

Crammed into the hold

Was trying hard but couldn’t trade

Her worst fears to be bold

At last the ship found the rest it sought

Amidst vessels in Boston’s port

And Maddy found herself rowed to land

Her future as certain as shifting sand

When a kindly smiling wealthy woman

From the rest had her selected

Maddy hoped she was one of the few

Who’d be more warmly effected.
