She shouts from the living room

‘Do you think I should take my coat?’

He calls back from up the stairs.

‘What?’

She steps a little closer and calls again

‘ I said, it looks a little like rain,

do you think I should take a coat?’

He emerges towelling his silver hair

‘What’s that about a goat?’

She sighs and goes to fetch her glasses

Stirs his tea and makes his toast.

He finds her in the kitchen

He holds her in his arms.

She remembers midnight passes

And why she fell for all his charms.

They pack the car together,

thermos, rugs and folding chair

To drive

To find a place beside the shore

And like their parents did before

To walk the sand

Then sit together hand in hand

And silently just stare.
