Lady Liberty: The Inspirational Woman America Needs Right Now to Change
We need to become more compassionate and caring
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand”
Lady Liberty you are one of a kind
Different, unique, strong and independent
You stand apart from the crowd and pave your own path
Uninterested in the accolades and the fame
The country behind you used to be the same
Now they are becoming just like the others
The same tyranny and bigotry like the ones you condemn
They need to change before the time is too late
You both came from something old and broken
From that, you rose into something new
You rebuilt yourselves from the ashes
To redefine yourself into something true
From the Colossus of Rhodes
An old statue straddling a harbor
Commemorating a battle fought and won
A beautiful woman was brought forth
From a tyrannical leader
Who tried to conquer the world and crush their spirit
Who imposed taxation without representation
A country who stood for freedom was created
Together you stand
With Lady Liberty in the east watching the sunset
America stretching out behind her
From sea to shining sea
“A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command”
Lady Liberty you stand tall and strong
Always ready to lend a hand
Ready to light the way for the needy
Showing us the true meaning of self-less.
America is strong in a different way
It is always ready to attack friends or foes
An army and an arsenal that can destroy the world
With an unchecked attitude
Lady Liberty you are the ultimate mother
The mother of the outcasted, downtrodden and unwanted
You bring them close, holding them to your heart
Welcoming them, nurturing them and giving them new life
The country behind you used to be that
Welcoming people, ideas and cultures
Now we are building barriers and policies
Wanting to outcast those who sought us out
Since you were placed in the harbor, Lady Liberty,
They come from all over, flocking to our seas and borders
Filled with hopes and dreams because of your kindness
You inspired them with thoughts of a better life
The country behind you is filled with turmoil and hate
People who are racist, unkind and bigoted speak the loudest
Afraid of people and things that are new and different
With policymakers that just care about getting reelected
“The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,”
Lady Liberty your value still has not changed
As you still look out through the harbor
You still speak out against tyranny and bigotry
You still welcome its victims to your shore
America as a country we are failing the people
We the people need to rise up
We need to rally behind our Lady Liberty
Speak out that we want freedom
Lady Liberty has commanded those who seek freedom come
For hundreds of years, they have flocked to our shores
Our ancestors have passed it down to us
Now it is up to us to tell our politicians
We want diversity and the sharing of ideas
We want equality among all people
We want all genders and sexual identities to feel safe
We want all races and religions to be free
“The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Lady Liberty you again command the downtrodden to come
Even though they live in the boarders behind you
Poverty and homelessness runs rampant
Hate and crime run unchecked in the streets
We need to look to you to guide us back
Back to what we stood for
Back to freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
Show us that the door to change is still open
You have inspired thousands to start over
We need you to inspire thousands to create change
It’s time to change our country
To be kind, caring and compassionate
That starts with informing yourself
Marches, petitions and speaking up for others
And in November, it is important to remember
Walking through the voting booth door
