It wasn’t fair—

the way you looked at me,

like I was your whole world,

like I was ‘home.’

I was unprepared

for your sunny gaze

to thaw my icy haze of loneliness,

for that loving warmth

to melt my resolve

like the liquid chocolate

of your irises—

no one has ever looked at me

the way you do.

Your love instantly

wrapped around my heart—a cozy blanket

on a long winter night—and

from that moment,

there was no future dream

without you in it.

I was never supposed to be there.

But it’s the little things

that change your life—

the red light,

leaving work early,

skipping the gym,

taking a walk in the park,

one look into your eyes.

I was never supposed to be there,

but I’m glad I was,

for I would have never met you.

Some might call it chance

that I happened across

the Animal Rescue’s

Adoption Day in the park,

but I know it was fate.

Just one look

into those puppy-dog eyes

was all it took to know

you are mine,

and I, yours.
