In Summer, Shall You Return?
A Sonnet by Karla Bowen Herman
In summer shall you return, my love?
Oh, how I’ve longed for you through Autumn, Winter and Spring!
Many are the nights I’ve gazed at the stars above,
Begging for your tender touch, crying for your caring kiss.
Chilled have been the days, cold have been the nights,
Without you here to heat my lonely, icy heart.
For only you can melt the frost that your flame ignites,
Replacing the stark darkness with summer's sultry amour.
On a delightfully-warm summer breeze, will you return?
The lilacs, tulips and daffodils have bloomed and fallen,
As has my countenance, with increasing concern;
For summer is here with promises unkept; you are not near.
But, the woodpecker's knocking: “It was not just a summer fling!”
And the bee buzzes in reply: “Love shall return, bearing a ring!"
