ICE ON THE WATER

Large sheets of grey ice acting like flying carpets.

11:30 pm, unable to sleep, out for a walk to burn some energy.

A walk out in a December Montana night.

Walking over the Higgins St. bridge I can clearly see the next bridge over.

The street lights on top of it reflect off the black water

turning the blackness into a bright whiteness.

The black water flows from that bridge to underneath this bridge.

Flowing over mountain peaks and bowls underneath the water.

Sheets of grey glass float on top of the surface.

The glass just seems to fly over the water

like it’s not really sitting on the water, but

suspended over it.

Large sheets of grey ice acting like flying carpets.

On the Higgins St. bridge a car passes by as I spot a collision about to happen.

Down below me in the river is this large log stuck in place. Unable to float down stream.

This log has been stuck there ever since I moved here to Missoula.

A tree hugger wouldn’t be able to wrap their arms all the way around this tree.

There’s a long wide sheet of grey ice looking to float right into the log.

Some reason I anticipate the ice to bounce and roll around the log,

but that seems to dynamic for a piece of ice.

The ice gets near the log than it seems to stop for a second right before it kisses

the log and then crumples apart.

The sound isn’t loud.

It’s like pop rock candy. The way it crackles in the mouth as it dissolves.

The ice fully split apart and no longer touching the log starts to fly under the Higgins St. bridge.

I loose interest before it even gets to that point and continue my walk across the bridge.
