I Don't Want to be Left Behind

When Everybody else Falls in Love

I don't want to be left behind.

All my cousins are getting married and I'm not,

It's fine.

I'm happy,

I am.

But I don't want to be the last one adding a plate to my grandmother's table.

I don't want to be the only one at Christmas without an individual family picture.

I don't want to sit alone, while everyone else has a significant other.

I don't want to be left behind.

All my friends from high school are having babies,

It's fine.

I'm happy,

I am.

But I don't want to be the last person to find somebody to spend the rest of their life with.

I don't want to be the only one without a ring on their finger and a partner who steals the blankets at night.

I don't want to sit at home on Valentine's day while every other guy is out buying flowers.

I don't want to be left behind.

Everyone I know has somebody to love,

It's fine.

I'm happy,

I am.

But I don't want to be the last option settling for someone who has to settle for me.

I don't want to be the only one who never found someone they truly connect with.

I don't want to be sixty sitting on the porch swing alone.

I don't want to be left behind.
