I Am Your Future, You Are My Past

A different set of polarities

Good morning to you yesterday my friend,

As I wake in a brand new day today, your tomorrow,

It’s like we live in different realities,

Oh the time, it’s all a gift, just something we borrow.

***

It makes my head spin, knowing,

We will never share the exact same hours,

I’ll always be alive in your tomorrows,

It’s like one of my super powers.

***

Will I ever experience life in your yesterdays,

Will you ever experience what it’s like in my fullness of time,

It’s our own secret realities, beckoning,

But locked, hours apart, separated by a day of mine.

***

As I sleep, you awaken,

Living in our own set of polarities,

Spring I say, autumn you insist,

Nothing, I mean nothing, we’ll ever experience as similarities.

***

I lay awash in glorious sunshine,

You head to bed in the cool hours of the night,

You’re heading into winter,

As I move into summer with sheer delight.

***

It breaks my beating heart,

Knowing you’ll never see the same sun rise in the morning,

I’ll never feel the glorious moonbeams you do,

Just as your evening is a dawning.

***

You’ll never know how it is to live this day of mine,

Because you are forever relished behind me,

Never to see the light of my day,

Never to spend the same minute of time, it’s just not to be.

***

To beat the time warp, could you give up your tomorrow,

To lose your coming times, your next 1440 minutes,

Or could I survive through my very own Groundhog Day,

Experiencing my today, twice over, without any limits.

***

There’s only one way we could share our realities,

That’s for you to lose a day in your time here on earth,

Or for one of my days to continue on for 48 hours,

I guess we’d discover what a day was really worth.

***

For us to ever meet in the same physical plane,

We’d need to overcome time, the time warped contrast,

You’d sacrifice a day to me, so I’d get to live and repeat,

Because you see, I am your future, you are my past.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
