Homesick
i like familiar things.
i like knowing all the local diners
and coffee shops
and the best places to get pizza.
i like knowing every road
that leads to the same place
and every park that the kids
hangout.
i like going to wawa at 3 am for fun
on a tuesday night
even though we need to be up early
wednesday morning
i like the comfort of people
i've known the longest
and the people who knew me the most
but didn't really know me at all.
my closest friends
have always been
my biggest haters
but they're familiar.
and until i can stop being homesick
i will continue to loudly love
the ones who hate me
in secret.

He walks oddly, shuffling and nearly tripping down the hallway toward his apartment door. I slow my pace, allowing my neighbor— a stuffy ex-marine with one missing tooth and a strong odor of liquor and two weeks' worth of unwashed stench always accompanying him—to reach his door.
