Hidden In Plain Sight

The face she hides from the world

She would always wear her hair straightened and long

In much the same manner as a weeping willow tree,

Hiding her eyes, her personality, her fear of the world

Attempting to be invisible, pretending she’s a nobody.

***

That glorious face hidden behind her golden locks

A rare glimpse of a brown eye, at times you’ll see,

Hiding her torment, stressed by her hateful world

Never trusting in anyone, not to any great degree.

***

She’s spent so many years hidden from our view

There wouldn’t be a single person who remembers,

Those days so very long ago, when she was free

A bright spark, a tiny flame in amongst the embers.

***

Once the world was an over abundance of pleasure

In the days where she truly believed, loved her life,

But those days are gone, devastatingly farewelled

Leaving terrible pain, heartache and crippling strife.

***

She struggles with her constant feelings of inadequacy

Hiding more than her face, her mind, her expressions,

On the odd chance she allows you to see her flaws

Do not judge her based on her foretold confessions.

***

If you’re lucky enough to receive a precious invite

Into the midst of her secrets, her love, her drive,

Guard the entry, watch her back, offer protection

Watch as her smile widens and she comes alive.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
